Nursing Liaison Librarian
Richard James

My role at Penn is to provide library support to undergraduate student nurses. I've been a librarian, mostly in health sciences and nursing, for about 10 years. Prior to my return to education and library career, I studied nursing for two years at the Queen Alexandria Hospital School of Nursing in Portsmouth, U.K. I then worked as a nursing auxiliary in hospitals in the U.K. for about 5 years, then came to the U.S. and worked for various housing and homelessness organizations.

I provide a safe space and I am an ally. I do not tolerate injustice or bullying.

I am also part-time faculty at the Community College of Philadelphia Library, and currently serve on the Family Advisory Council of the duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, and as technology column editor for the Journal of Hospital Librarianship. In 2016, I joined the National Pediatric Cardiology Quality Improvement Collaborative's Patient and Family Support Learning Lab.

In my professional and personal capacities, I'm interested in exploring, promoting and supporting the special health care and social support needs of at-risk youth, members of the Queer community, and poor and marginalized folk, and in increasing awareness of Adverse Childhood Experiences, toxic stress, and compassionate practices in health, education, and social service professions.
