Uploading Search Results into EndNote & Reference Manager

The Library does not recommend searching databases using EndNote or Reference Manager's Internet Search ("Connect") feature. We believe you will retrieve better results searching the databases using their native software and then uploading specific records into the appropriate program. The instructions below guide you through this process.

OVID Search Interface

You can now directly export records from OVID databases into EndNote (version 4 or greater) and Reference Manager (version 7 or greater).
  1. Search an Ovid database as usual. At the bottom of the citation display pages you will see the "Results Manager".
  2. Under "Fields" select "Complete Reference".
  3. Under "Result Format" choose "Direct Export" and select the action "Save".
EndNote Instructions
  1. EndNote will open and prompt you to open a library. The records will be automatically imported into the EndNote library you select.
RefMan Instructions
  1. Reference Manager will open and prompt you to open a library. The records will be automatically imported into the RefMan library you select.

.

PubMed Search Interface

  1. Access PubMed and execute your search.
  2. Once results are retrieved, place a check next to relevant records and then select "Clipboard" from the "Send to" pull-down menu on the Action Bar.
  3. When finished searching and marking records, select "Clipboard" from the Features Bar to display marked citations. On this page, select "MEDLINE" in the "Display" pull-down menu on the Action Bar.
  4. Choose "File" from the "Send to" pull-down menu.
  5. Select "Save" on the following screen. In the next screen you will be able to change the file name (we recommend saving with a *.txt extension).
EndNote Instructions
  1. In EndNote, open the library where you would like these references saved.
  2. Select "Import Filters" from the "File" menu. Select "Open File Manager".
  3. Scroll through the list of filters. Place a check next to "PubMed (NLM)". Close the Endnote Import Filters window.
  4. Next, select "Import" from the "File" menu. Make sure "PubMed (NLM)" is selected as the import option. Under "Import Option", click "Choose File" and find your saved text file.
  5. Finally, click the Import button.
RefMan Instructions

  1. In Reference Manager, open the database/library where you would like these references saved.
  2. In the "References" menu, select the "Import Text File" command.
  3. In the "Filters" field, select the "Browse" button, select "PubMed.cap".
  4. In the "Text File" field, select the "Browse" button, and then select your downloaded *.txt file.
  5. Click the Import button.

.

ISI Search Interface

  1. After searching the ISI Citation Databases, mark records to keep and copy them to the marked list using the "Submit Marks" button.
  2. Select the "Marked List" button located on the top of the screen.
  3. ISI will export author, title, and source. Specify additional fields you will need.
  4. Select the "Export to Reference Software" button.
EndNote Instructions
  1. For many web browsers, EndNote will open, and you will be prompted to open an EndNote library. If not, try downloading the ISI export plug-in. After downloading the plugin, try the "Export to Reference Software" button again.
  2. If all else fails, you may need to download the citations as a text file and then upload into EndNote using the "ISI Web of Science" import filter.
RefMan Instructions
  1. For many web browsers, Reference Manager will open, and you will be prompted to open a RefMan library. If not, try downloading the ISI export plug-in. After downloading the plugin, try the "Export to Reference Software" button again.
  2. If all else fails, you may need to download the citations as a text file and then upload into Reference Manager using the "ISI-CE.cap" filter.
