How Do I Get That? - For Faculty

The Penn Library system has several different services designed to help you get the information you need. Use this guide to help you get your information as quickly as possible; the most efficient options are listed in bold face.

1. The book I want is at another campus library or in the High Density Storage Facility.

Walk over to the library and check out the book.

or

Request that the book be sent to the library most convenient for you.

  • Look the book up in Franklin. From the book's record, type your PennKey and Password in the boxes on the upper right corner of the page.
  • After logging in, click on the FX button to place your request.
  • The bibliographic information will automatically fill in the request form.
  • Your item will be delivered directly to your department office, or to any Penn Library circulation desk, if you prefer. You will receive an e-mail when the item is available.

2. The book I want is charged to another user or the University of Pennsylvania doesn't have the book I want.

Check to see if Drexel University owns the book you want.

  • Check Drexel's online catalog, located at http://innopac.library.drexel.edu/
  • If Drexel does own your book,as a Penn faculty member you can obtain a free courtesy borrower's card at Drexel. The W. W. Hagerty Library is located at 33rd and Market Streets.

Request the book through FacultyEXPRESS.

or

Search for the book on BorrowDirect+.
  • Go to the BorrowDirect+ home page, located at http://webdoc.library.upenn.edu/borrowdirect/
  • When you receive the e-mail notification alerting you that the item is available for pickup, please forward the message to us at pld@pobox.upenn.edu and let us know whether you would like it delivered to your departmental office or a Penn Library circulation desk.

Recall the book from the patron who has it.
  • Look the book up in Franklin. From the book's record, click on Place Request at the top of the screen.
  • Log in, using your last name and your barcode, the last ten digits of your PENNCard, which is your Penn Library ID.
  • Select "Recall from current borrower".

Request the book from Interlibrary Loan by filling in the form at http://webdoc.library.upenn.edu/cgi-bin/ill.cgi?requesttype=Book.

3. I want an ARTICLE from a journal or conference proceedings in High Density Storage.

(Make sure you've checked Penn Library's electronic journals to be certain that electronic access isn't available)

  • Look up the journal or conference in Franklin. Go to the record page for the item and type your PennKey and Password in the boxes on the upper right corner of the page.
  • After logging in, click on the FX button to place your request.
  • Add the specific citation information.
  • The article will be scanned for e-mail delivery to you.

4. I want an ARTICLE from a journal or conference proceedings, that Penn doesn't have.

(Make sure you've checked Penn Library's electronic journals to be certain that electronic access isn't available)

Send e-mail to engrdoc@seas.upenn.edu with the citation. The Engineering Library will take care of the details to obtain and deliver the document to you.

or

Use the FacultyEXPRESS Article Request form. Log in with your PennKey and Password, fill in the citation information, and your article will be delivered by email.

  • Find the citation, either from the Article Finder accessible through the PennText button or a library database search.
  • Select the Document Delivery option from the PennText menu.
  • Log in to FacultyEXPRESS using your PennKey and Password.
  • The article will be scanned for e-mail delivery to you.
